200g ground pork
2 tbsp chopped green onion
1 tsp minced ginger
½ tsp five-spice powder
1 tbsp oyster sauce
1 tbsp soy sauce
A pinch of salt
2 eggs
1 tbsp cooking oil
3 tbsp sweet potato starch
Fresh lotus root (sliced into even rounds)
Oil for deep frying
Prepare the Pork Filling:
In a bowl, combine ground pork, chopped green onion, minced ginger, five-spice powder, oyster sauce, soy sauce, and salt. Mix thoroughly until well combined.
Slice and Stuff the Lotus Root:
Slice the lotus root into thin, even rounds. Take two slices and sandwich a small amount of the pork filling in between to create a “lotus bite.”
Make the Batter:
In a separate bowl, whisk together 2 eggs, 1 tablespoon of oil, and 3 tablespoons of sweet potato starch. Stir until the batter is smooth with no lumps.
Coat the Lotus Bites:
Dip each pork-stuffed lotus sandwich into the batter, ensuring it's evenly coated.
Fry Until Golden:
Heat oil in a deep pan over medium heat. Carefully place the coated lotus bites into the oil. Fry until golden brown on both sides.
Double Fry for Extra Crispiness (Optional):
For extra crunch, increase the heat slightly and refry briefly for 1–2 minutes after the initial frying.
Serve:
Drain excess oil on paper towels. Serve hot, optionally sprinkled with chili powder or salt for extra flavor.
